When British Major John Andre was stopped for questioning by three American soldiers during the American Revolutionary War, little did they realize at that time that their actions would be responsible for turning one of America's most celebrated generals into America's most notorious traitor.
While the three soldiers questioned him they began to be suspicious of his behavior. At the time he was dressed in civilian clothes without any hint of being a British officer. When the answers to their questions began to sound suspicious, the men search Andre and discovered in his possession defensive plans for West Point.
These plans were directly linked to General Benedict Arnold. Initially the 3 men believed that their prisoner must have stolen the plans, but in time and after much questioning, it became clear that Andre was working under direct orders from his superiors and had gained the plans directly from Arnold. Shortly before his capture, Major John Andre had been transported to Arnold's home by a British sloop-of-war and had come under fire from American forces. In order to avoid capture, Andre slipped out of his military uniform and into civilian clothes.
He left Arnold's house on horseback along with the plans Arnold had provided him for West Point and how the British could take the fort. When Benedict Arnold heard that Andre had been captured he fled to the British.
However, the British refused to hand him over. Andre was hanged as a spy a few days later. About 40 years later his body was exhumed and reburied in Westminster Abbey. This would not be the end of the story. Many years later, Captain Riley was surveying land in Northwest Ohio plotting out the next phase of Ohio's settlement by dividing the land into counties.
The Ohio Legislature decided to making a lasting memorial to the three men responsible for uncovering Benedict Arnold's plans that could have caused the American Revolution to turn out differently.
